British Letter Mail to Overseas Destinations 1840-1875 by Jane and Michael Moubray
This is the first edition published in 1992 (a second came out in 2017). When it came out, the book broke new grounds in the literature of postal history since it covered a vast area – mails going to ALL countries from Britain. Following a very useful introduction to postal history terms and a chapter on the development of mail routes through Europe, the book covers each country / area via separate chapters. A total of 18 chapters are followed by rate tables for each chapter and then 7 different appendices. A total of almost 550 pages. No wonder it took the authors 15 years to do the research and complete the book. For their fine work, the authors won the Crawford medal for the best piece of philatelic literature published that year. Jane Moubray later become the first female President of The Royal Philatelic Society London in 1996 and was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1997.
The book is in very good condition with no markings or writings. No DJ was issued. ue to it being extremely useful but in short supply, the book used to sell at very high prices. Also some people collect all Crawford medal winners and that could have contributed to its demand. I have seen prices of £300 and EUR 400 at two dealers when I was looking to buy my copy; both sold when I was thinking about it! Finally managed to get one for approx. £250. Selling at my buying price.
