Deats, the great American bibliophile and philatelist, made available to the Journal of the Philatelic Literature Society the reminder of an index (including the title page) to Vol. IX (the final) of The Post Office, which he had compiled and published in December 1900. This is the fifth supplement brought out to The Journal of the Philatelic Literature Society (JPLS). While it is not clear from a perusal of JPLS with which issue it was sent out, R. King-Farlow in his 1948 “The Journal of The Philatelic Literature Society: Cumulative Index. Volumes I to XVIII, 1908-1918” asserts that it was with Vol. V No. 1 (July 1912).

This is the third supplement brought out to The Journal of the Philatelic Literature Society (JPLS) and was circulated along with the Vol. II No. 4 (October 1909) issue. BTK Smith penned an article (published in two parts) on the philatelic publications of the pioneering dealer brothers, Alfred and Stafford Smith, in JPLS. One of the publications covered is The Stamp-Collector’s Magazine. Since, according to Smith, the original index to Vol. I is very incomplete, he compiled a supplementary index of countries referred to therein.

A later edition of 300 copies bound in Paper Covers was published by the Philatelic Literature Society and entitled “Catalogue of the Philatelic Library of the Earl of Crawford, K.T.” This was distributed free to members of the society, £1.11s.6d if members wanted extra copies and two guineas (about $10.22) to non-members (Ref. Philatelic Literature Review Vol. 28 No. 2 Q2 1979).

Murland who was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 2nd Battalion, Madras Pioneers.

BTK Smith was editor of the JPLS and mentions in this issue that since no title page or index to Vol. IV of Pierre Mahé’s journal La Gazette des Timbres was ever issued, he is now rectifying the omission.
